Join Theatre Under The Stars on Tuesday, February 18th to celebrate theatrical storytelling with a Calypso-flavored tale of one small girl, who finds love in a world of prejudice.
Winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Once On This Island is the sweeping, universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world. Ti Moune rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger— love or death—the stakes being Ti Moune's life.
When she pursues Daniel, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love are not enough to win Daniel's heart, and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price. The gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall that it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.
The groundbreaking vision of two-time Tony Award-nominated director Michael Arden (and acclaimed choreographer Camille A. Brown) conjures up “a place where magic is possible and beauty is apparent for all to see!” With a score that bursts with life from Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the Tony Award-winning songwriters of Anastasia and Ragtime, Once On This Island is a timeless testament to theater’s unlimited possibilities.
